How to Choose the Right Ski Length
The right ski length makes you more in control, less tired, and having more fun. Here's how to get it right.
Why Ski Length Matters
Ski length affects how easy a ski is to turn, how stable it feels at speed, and how it handles different snow. Too long and the ski controls you. Too short and you lose stability.
The right length depends on four factors: your height, your weight, your skiing ability, and your preferred terrain.
The Quick Rule: Height as a Starting Point
Beginner
Chin height
Shorter skis are easier to turn and more forgiving. Great for learning.
Intermediate
Nose to forehead
More stability at speed while still being manageable.
Advanced
Forehead to above head
More energy, better carving, more power for aggressive skiing.
Ski Size Chart by Height
Use this chart as a starting point, then adjust based on weight and skiing style (see below).
| Skier Height | Beginner | Intermediate | Advanced |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4'0" – 4'4" | 100–110 cm | 110–120 cm | 115–125 cm |
| 4'5" – 4'9" | 110–120 cm | 120–130 cm | 125–135 cm |
| 4'10" – 5'2" | 120–130 cm | 130–145 cm | 140–155 cm |
| 5'3" – 5'6" | 135–145 cm | 145–160 cm | 155–170 cm |
| 5'7" – 5'10" | 145–155 cm | 155–170 cm | 165–180 cm |
| 5'11" – 6'1" | 155–165 cm | 165–180 cm | 175–190 cm |
| 6'2" and up | 165–175 cm | 175–185 cm | 185–195 cm |
Adjust for Weight
Height is a starting point, but weight matters too. Skis flex under your body weight — a stiffer flex requires more force to engage, which comes with body weight.
- If you're heavier than average for your height, size up 5–10 cm from the chart above.
- If you're lighter than average, consider sizing down 5 cm.
- Kids especially: junior skis should be shorter, as children are still developing coordination and strength.
Terrain and Ski Type
Different ski types are optimized for different lengths even within the same ability level:
Groomed Carving Skis
Mid-length is ideal. Shorter for quick turns on groomers, longer for speed runs.
Powder Skis
Generally longer — the extra length and surface area helps you float in deep snow.
All-Mountain Skis
Mid-length works for most conditions. Prioritize based on where you ski most.
Mogul / Freestyle Skis
Shorter skis make quick direction changes easier in bumps and park features.
